The great German actor Udo Kier has passed away

The great German actor Udo Kier has passed away, one of the most distinctive and enigmatic figures of European and American cinema. With a career spanning more than two hundred films and collaborations with creators such as Lars von Trier, Werner Herzog, Rainer Werner Fassbinder, and Gus Van Sant, Kier left his mark on arthouse cinema for decades, embodying dark, eccentric, yet always unforgettable characters. Udo Kier served as President of the International Jury of the Cyprus Film Days – International Festival in 2019, lending prestige and international visibility to the event. On that occasion, he was also honoured with the Festival’s Lifetime Achievement Award. His collaboration with the festival and his presence in Limassol left a small but essential legacy: a reminder that good cinema knows no borders, and that the personality of a great artist can illuminate even the smallest of stages. Cyprus Film Days 2026 International Festival Announces Change in Artistic Direction | 17-25 April 2026

Cyprus Film Days International Festival 2026 announces the appointment of director and producer Petros Charalambous as Artistic Director of the upcoming edition, in which he will serve alongside director Argyro Nicolaou, jointly leading the festival’s artistic direction. Artistic Directors Argyro Nicolaou and Petros Charalambous are committed to upholding the festival’s high standards while expanding its horizons through fresh challenges and new collaborations. Together, they will curate a programme of premiere screenings of films by both acclaimed and emerging film directors from Cyprus and around the world—films that explore contemporary social, political, and artistic issues with empathy, daring storytelling, and a critical, unconventional lens. CALL FOR FILM SUBMISSIONS

The Deputy Ministry of Culture of Cyprus and the Rialto Theatre launch a call for submissions of feature films in the two Competition Sections of “Cyprus Film Days”, the official international film festival of Cyprus. The Festival aims to broaden its horizons beyond the geographical boundaries of Cyprus, as well as to attract international film industry professionals and audiences, thereby turning Cyprus into a meeting hub for the three neighbouring continents. The 24th edition of Cyprus Film Days IFF will take place between 17 and 25 April 2026, both in Nicosia and Limassol. The feature films to be submitted must be 2024 or 2025 or 2026 productions. Final frame with powerful stories and distinctive awards 

April by Déa Kulumbegashvili (Georgia, Italy, France) and Smaragda by Emilios Avraam won Best Film Awards at the International and Cypriot Competition Section, respectively, at the 23rd Cyprus Film Days International Festival 2025.   This year’s exciting journey of screenings and parallel events ended on a high note on Saturday 12 April with the presentation of the Audience Award, the winners of the competition section and the awards of Dot.on.the.Map Industry Days co-production, training and networking platform. Smaragda by Emilios Avraam also garnered Best Performance Award for the work of protagonist Niovi Charalambous. Best Director Award in the Cypriot Films Competition Section went to Kyros Papavasileiou for his film The Sock.
